NEWS: Grammys Change Rules for 'Best New Artist' Category; Drake Has Chance to Win Big Next Year

Rolling Stone:

Last year, fine print in the Grammy rulebook prevented Lady Gaga from being nominated for Best New Artist — an award she likely would have won — and the show's producers promised to look into what fans perceived as a monster snub. "There will be some changes so that particular scenario won't repeat itself," Recording Academy President Neil Portnow said in December 2009. Now the Grammy committee has announced an amendment to its official criteria for the category.

According to the rule change, an artist will be eligible for Best New Artist even if they are nominated for one of their own singles (and don't win) or feature on another artist's nominated compilation or album before releasing their own full album. Last year, Lady Gaga was ineligible for the category at the 52nd Grammy Awards because her single "Just Dance" was nominated for Best Dance Song at the 51st Grammys. With Gaga out of the competition, the award went to the Zac Brown Band.

The most immediate beneficiary of the rule change is Drake. The up-and-coming MC was nominated for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Solo Performance for "Best I Ever Had" at the 2010 ceremony. However, since he lost in both categories, and his debut album Thank Me Later was just released last month, the Toronto rapper seems like a lock to be nominated in the Best New Artist category in 2011.

VIDEO: Lady Gaga/Elton John Grammy Performance 2010

The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards opened with a generation-spanning collaboration between Lady Gaga and Elton John featuring remixed versions of both artists’ high-profile songs at dueling pianos and bedazzled eye wear. After the "Pokerface" singer appeared in an emerald crystallized bodysuit singing a slowed version of her card-themed song, a ringmaster announced, "Everyone’s going goo goo for Gaga." Soon thereafter, Gaga reappeared at a piano across from Sir Elton John, both of whom had smeared make-up on their faces. The two outrageous singers did a mash-up of her "Speechless" and his "Your Song" as mannequin arms eerily reached from the musical instrument.

NEWS: Grammys to Honor Michael Jackson With All-Star/3D Tribute

Michael Jackson will be honored with a celebration fit for a king. The Grammys will stage a star-studded tribute to the late legend at this month’s show.

Usher, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson, and Carrie Underwood will come together, along with the voice of Michael Jackson, in a performance for the King of Pop at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. The show will also feature a never-before-seen 3-D mini-movie for “Earth Song” that was created for Jackson’s
“This Is It” concerts.

“It was one of the most important portions of the concert tour to Michael and when Michael saw the film for the first time at his last rehearsal, there were tears in his eyes,” says Ken Ehrlich, Grammy co-Executive Producer and longtime Jackson associate.

In order to enjoy the 3-D TV experience at home, Target stores nationwide will offer free 3-D glasses from January 24-31. Those in the audience at Staples Center will also be able to share in the 3-D viewing with their own glasses.

Previously announced performers for the 52nd Grammy Awards include Beyoncé, Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Maxwell, Pink, and Taylor Swift.

Music’s biggest night will broadcast live from Los Angeles on Sunday, January 31, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
