NEWS: Dr. Dre Talks About the "Detox" Delay and New Instrumental Album [VIBE Excerpts]

Here are excerpts from VIBE's interview with Dr. Dre:

ON THE DETOX HOLD-UP:
When you first announced Detox did you think it would take this long?
Absolutely not. I thought it would take at worst case a couple of years. For example, actual work time on The Chronic was nine months and actual work time on my last album, 2001, was about 10 months. The actual work time on this album is about half of that, where I’m seriously focusing on it. There is always something coming up. Like signing talent, old and new.

NEWS: Character Study- Just How Real is Nicki Minaj? [VIBE Cover Story] (Full Artice)

"How real is Nicki Minaj? Is she a doll pulling her own strings to satisfy the appetites of her Barbie brigade and alpha male following? To a point. Is she the evolution of the female MC—quirky, fashionable, talented? Arguably. Here's what's certain: she's a work in progress. And the final product might not be what you're expecting."

VIDEO: VIBE's Unreleased Tupac Interview [Parts 1 & 2]

On the 13 year anniversary of his death, VIBE has released previously unreleased footage of Tupac Shakur talking about where he’d like to be in 2016.

"It’s been 13 years since 2Pac died on the 13th day of September 1996, yet the void he left in hip-hop–let alone black culture–is gaping, For his anniversary, VIBE revives the fallen icon, if just for a couple minutes, with the first in a series of previously unreleased interview footage from May ‘96. As he discusses a unified rap nation and where he’d be in 2016, ‘Pac is everything we remember: Candid, passionate, prophetic. Rest in peace, Tupac Amaru Shakur"

VIBE Magazine Shutting Down

"Vibe magazine, the urban-music magazine founded in 1993 by Quincy Jones, is the latest victim of the media recession. A source with knowledge of the situation tells DailyFinance that the staff has learned the magazine is ceasing publication, and assistants in the offices of editor in chief Danyel Smith and publisher Edgar Hernandez confirmed the news. No further information was immediately available. Messages left for Smith, Hernandez and Vibe Media CEO Steve Aaron were not immediately returned.

"Vibe enjoyed significant success in the late '90s and early part of this decade as hip hop and R&B became the nation's predominant forms of pop music. But in recent years the title has fallen on hard times under its new owner, the Wicks Group, which bought it in 2006. In February, it reduced its circulation and publishing frequency, cut salaries and moved employees to a four-day workweek to save money." -via

VIBE's Best Rapper Ever: The Final Four

Six weeks, and 131 rappers later, and we’re down to four. And we can’t say we’re all that surprised, as the four MCs left standing—Eminem, 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z—are undisputed legends in the game. Still, it wasn’t a cakewalk. Well, at least not for everyone. Biggie, the No. 1 seed in Bracket III, faced the toughest competition making it to the Final Four. His defeat of fellow New York icon Nas by six percentage points (53 percent of the vote to No. 2 seeded Nas’ 47 percent) was the narrowest margin of victory for any of the rappers still in the hunt. The two other No. 1 seeds moving into the Final Four, Eminem and 2Pac, on the other hand, advanced with relative ease. In Bracket I, Eminem took down No. 3 seed Snoop Dogg with 80 percent of the vote, while in Bracket II, 2Pac also moved easily past a No. 3 seed, KRS-One, with 76 percent of votes cast. Jay-Z is the only rapper in the Final Four who didn’t enter the competition as a No. 1 seed. The Jiggaman, who entered the field as Bracket IV’s No. 2 seed, skated past the original God MC, No. 1 seeded Rakim, with 60 percent of the vote to Ra’s 40 percent.

Will Eminem triumph again and move on to the finals with the chance to unify the belts or will Jay-Z make a stand? And as for Biggie and ’Pac, well, which is it? Vote now here. And vote daily. And check back early and often for more updates on VIBE Presents The Best Rapper Ever!

VIBE's Best Rapper Alive: The Elite Eight.. Lil Wayne falls off..

It’s official: The so-called “Best Rapper Alive” isn’t The Best Rapper Ever, at least not according to the fans voting for The Best Rapper Ever at VIBE.com. In a face-off spanning generations and styles, KRS-One, who once famously claimed, “I am hip hop,” took down Lil Wayne, who has “I AM MUSIC” tattooed on his face, with a count of 61 percent of the vote to Wayne’s 39 percent. As Bracket II’s No. 3 and No. 2 seeds respectively, the Blastmaster’s victory over Weezy F. Baby was easily the biggest surprise in Round Four, although Bracket III also saw a No. 3 take down a No. 2 seed as Nas marched past Ice Cube with 68 percent of the vote. All of the No. 1 seeds easily advanced, with Ghostface Killah, Bracket IV’s No. 5 seed, putting up the best fight before falling to No. 1 Rakim after securing just 23 percent of the vote. Elsewhere, No. 3 seeded Snoop Dogg and ended DMX’s Cinderella run from the No. 10 slot, knocking out the Dark Man with 60 percent of the vote in Bracket I, and No. 2 seeded Jay-Z rolled past No. 3 seeded Andre 3000 with 63 percent of the vote in Bracket IV.

With only eight MCs left, the matchups are heating up. In Bracket I, Eminem, who was named The Best Rapper Alive in last year’s tournament and entered The Best Rapper Ever as the overall No. 1 seed, faces off against fellow Dr. Dre protégé and No. 3 seed, Snoop Dogg. In Bracket II, No. 1 seed 2Pac goes head to head against Lil Wayne killer KRS-One, while Bracket III finds No. 1 seed The Notorious B.I.G. squaring off against a former rival (of sorts) in No. 3 seed Nas. Then, there’s Bracket IV, where the final pairing finds No. 1 seed Rakim meeting No. 2 seed Jay-Z in a battle of God MCs. Who you got? Vote here.

DMX gets in Depth with VIBE

"It’s the No. 10 seed no one saw coming. Nearly three years since his last album, Year of the Dog… Again (Ruff Ryders/Def Jam, 2006), and just one month since being released from an Arizona jail stemming from a series of arrests for drug possession, animal cruelty, and identity theft, DMX is still going strong in VIBE Presents The Best Rapper Ever, going up against Bracket 1’s No. 3 seed, Snoop Dogg, in Round 4’s battle of the Dogs.

"To date, the man born Earl Simmons has already knocked off The Game, 50 Cent, and LL Cool J, not a bad run for a troubled superstar who’s spent much of the past five years making more headlines for his brushes with the law than his signature multiplatinum growl on the mic. But with news of a new album on the way (at Hot 97’s Summer Jam this past weekend in New York, producer and longtime collaborator Swizz Beatz promised the Dog’s return in 2010), and the threat of more jail time avoided for now (earlier this month he was given 18 months of supervised probation plus fines for assaulting a Phoenix corrections officer), the unpredictable rapper tells VIBE in this exclusive interview that he’s ready to re-enter the game."

Y'all Want This Party Started, Right?!

Cocaine Blunts celebrates another "Scrapbook Saturday," "today with Zev Borow’s excellent Vibe feature on the history of the legendary NYC night club The Tunnel. It only seemed appropriate in light of those Jay-Z clips. The absence of a Tunnel-type venue has almost certainly played a role in the decaying New York hip hop scene." Circa '99-'00
